Unveiling History: The 2024 Harriet Tubman Special Edition Coins by the U.S. Mint
The United States Mint has recently unveiled a set of commemorative coins in honor of the abolitionist Harriet Tubman. This unique collection, part of the Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Program, includes a $5 gold coin, a $1 silver coin, and a half-dollar clad coin. These coins are released to commemorate the bicentennial of Tubman's birth.
The design of each coin is distinct and meaningful. The $5 gold coin features a portrait of Harriet Tubman in her post-Civil War years, with inscriptions like "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." Its reverse side shows arms clasped in support, surrounded by inscriptions of Tubman's core values, including “FAITH,” “FREEDOM,” and “EQUALITY.”
The $1 silver coin's obverse design depicts Tubman offering her hand to the viewer, symbolizing an invitation to freedom. The reverse side portrays silhouettes crossing a bridge of clasped hands, with the Big Dipper and the North Star in the background, significant for their role in guiding enslaved people to freedom.
Lastly, the half-dollar clad coin shows Tubman leading an armed expedition during the Civil War on the obverse, with two Civil War-era boats in the background. This design commemorates her role in the Combahee River Raid, which led to the freedom of over 700 enslaved persons.
These coins are not just currency but symbols of Tubman's enduring legacy of courage, leadership, and commitment to equality and justice.
